In a world adapting to a global pandemic, we are positioned as passive spectators to a screen. In this collaborative performance, artists Mio Harada, Shoko Imai, and Megan Lucille Boettcher contemplate how society and our lives are changing as the COVID pandemic continues to unravel. Shaking up the relationship between producers and consumers, the artists experiment by inviting the audience to liberate and reposition the originally fixed 2D consumption of media by staging a 3D experience using all the senses: two screens, two performances, live from Glasgow and Tokyo. Multitasking, attention divided, consequently the audience themselves become live ‘performers’ from the spaces that have been society’s predominant stage for over a year: one’s personal space, one’s home.

Given its international dimensions, this performance will include both English and Japanese, followed by a Q&A with the artists. 

This event will take place via Zoom, with a scheduled break. Attendees will be able to ask questions via the chat function.

NOTE: This performance is ideally viewed on two separate devices, one screen live from Tokyo, the other live from Glasgow (though using two browser windows on a desktop or laptop can provide a similar experience). Megan Lucille Boettcher is an American artist currently pursuing her Master of Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art. While her current projects mainly utilise performance, video, photography, and installation, Boettcher works in a variety of media, revolving around her desire to best communicate and discuss the difficult subject matters at the centre of her practice. Drawing from a reservoir of personal experiences as her catalyst, Boettcher challenges her own vulnerability by exposing ‘ugly’ and traumatic histories and experiences and the intimate places their residues reside. Through her work, Boettcher seeks to enable a process of healing and encourage discussion of shared experience, fostering broader conversations around personal, communal, and societal transgressions while desiring action, from which healing and change may emerge as potential outcomes.

Recent presentations of her work include: Ashes (P103 Mischkonzern, Berlin, 2017), Sorry, Mom. I’m airing my dirty laundry (Jiang Shang Yi Gao Suo, Taiwan, 2020), and Dear Christmas Eve 2013: Fuck You… & thank you (performance on Instagram Live, Christmas Eve 2020).

Mio Harada is a Tokyo-based performer/curator/writer and a candidate of the MA Global Arts (Curation) at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has participated in numerous performance pieces over the last twelve years. In 2020, she co-curated the online exhibition Alter-narratives, where she investigated different possibilities of exhibiting art during the time of COVID-19. She is also director of the feminist artist collective ‘the fuu’. Recent performances include: As You Exit To (Goethe Institut, Tokyo, 2020); Hello, Mosquito (live broadcast, 2020); and Hey, White Rabbit. Don’t Forget your watch (Higashi-nakano Vanilla Studio, Tokyo, 2019).

Shoko Imai is a Japanese art director, set designer, graphic designer, and a candidate of the MA Global Arts (Research) at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has studied performing arts at Central Saint Martins and Goldsmiths, University of London, returning to Japan following the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic. She recently collaborated with Mio Harada in the performance production As You Exit To (Goethe Institut, Tokyo, 2020), undertaking poster design, lighting design and video production.
